Sukupuolentutkimuksen seura* – Sällskapet för genusforskning ry (SUNS)
tukee SahWira Africa Internationalin esittämää kritiikkiä ruskeiden ja
mustien naisten – tässä tapauksessa nuoren tytön – koloniaalisesta
hyväksikäytöstä hyväntekeväisyyden nimissä. Sukupuolentutkimuksen  seura
pitää erittäin tärkeänä, että lasten oikeuksista sekä sukupuoleen ja
seksuaalisuuteen liittyvistä kysymyksistä puhutaan  kunnioittavasti ja
niin, ettei länsimainen katse ja näkökulma hallitse  keskustelua.

Kiitämme täten Raster-verkostoa haasteesta ja kehotamme myös muita
tieteellisiä järjestöjä, kuten Suomen Queer-tutkimuksen Seuraa,
jatkamaan keskustelua.

*kannanoton julkaisemisesta on päättänyt SUNSin hallitus, joka on  Elina
Penttistä lukuun ottamatta kannanoton takana.

Statement: Time to challenge white saviour mentality

The Finnish Society for Gender Studies* (SUNS) supports the critique
presented by SahWira Africa International against the colonial
exploitation of brown and black women – in this case a young girl – in
the name of charity. The Society for Gender Studies considers it very
important that children’s rights and questions concerning gender and
sexuality are discussed in respectful ways and so that western gaze  and
perspectives do not dominate the discussion.

We thus thank Raster-network for the challenge and suggest that other
scientific societies, such as the Finnish Society for Queer Studies
continues the discussion.

* The board of SUNS made the decision to publish the statement and all
but one member, Elina Penttinen, stand behind the statement.
